You can get a different view of the enchanting landscape and enjoy it. AroundBad Kohlgrub are 90 kilometres of walking trails, above all the hiking tou to the “Hörnle”, the closest mountain to Bad Kohlgrub which is right infront of the door. From there you will have a fantastic view sometimes youcan even see far up to the city of Munich and its surroundings and also to te mountain Zugspitze. Walking is one of the most beautiful ways to enjoy nature, during all seasons. In spring you can see the rebirth of wildlife, in sumer experience the long warm days in pleasant mountain air, the wonderfl play of colours and the splendid panoramic view in autumn, or in winter “a dream in white“.
As the Ammergau Alps are member of the association “Best of Hiking“ there are GPS trails, a variety of good precise maps and plenty of unspoiled nature . What about a hiking tour to Schleierfälle or Scheibum for instance. Meditation Trail Ammergau Alps
The places of power around Bad Kohlgrub will help you to gain new energy. The Meiation Trail, dedicated to “the Burning Heart”, invites you to combine iking and meditating” The Trail was finished in summer 2009. It leads accoss 15 stations starting from the Pilgrimage Church of Wies to the park of Linderhof Castle. Hiking in this mediation trail can be a break from your everyday life.
Discover sources of power like the Schleiefälle or enjoy the overwhelming view form the Hörnle peaks. From here Hotel Schillingshof and the pleasure of being pampered is within easy reach.

Discovering the places of power
Der Zeitberg – The mountain of time
During a relaxing trip to the top of the Zeitbrg by the overhead railway to the mountain Hörrnle you can leave everday life far behind and “under” you. In the different time zones (stations on the circular trail) in the Hörnle area you can enjoy a great view and tranquility. Either on the seats of the world number one 3D atural movie, or in the reading corner, or on a massage lounger or in a mud bath.
Ammer Springs
Its mainly water of the Linder seeping away in the West of Graswang that comes to the surface as so called plunge pools, rising bubbling water holes. It doesn’t take long and the spring fed pools turn into two little brooks which unite to the little river Ammer “Kleine Ammer”, which then winds in various loops over the low moorland of the Ettal basin. In the wide stream bed of the big river Ammer “Große Ammer” it then flows into the North.
Fatima Chapel
There is a small gem on the heights above the village Saulgrub. From there you can overlook the complete northern Ammer Valley. This small votive chapel was built by Josef Leismüller. When in 1939 as a young man he had to take part in the second World War, He vowed to build a chapel in the case of coming back fom the war in good health. After 5 years as a prisoner of war in Minsk he came back home to Saulgrub.
Another 4 years later he went on Pilgrimage to the Portuguese pilgrimage church Fatima. From there he took a statue of “Our Lady of Fatima” to Saulgrub. He stood up to his oath now and started together with a mason who was his friend to build Fatima Chapel hich was consecrated on 12th of September in 1954.
Rochusfeld
During the course of ages changing climatic conditions formed first the low moorlands with moss, grasses, bushes and trees. Plants didn’t rot in the oxyen-deprived and acid water of the lakes left by the glaciers but turn to peat. The lakes gradually silted up and the mud grew layer by layer. At all times the inhabitants of Bad Kohlgrub have been usin the mud according to their purposes. In former times the mud and turf pieces had only been used as heatng material. But since 1870 the precious mud had become a remedy because of its natural healing effect.
The mud’ s integral healing power animates metabolism and blood circulation, acts on hormone regulation, strengthens immune defense and ensures deep relaxation.
Scheibum – Gap of Ammer
About 120.000 years ago (top moraine area) after leaving the Alps the Ammer found its way to the North. By this a fascinating gorge of the Ammer has been formed. It is situated between Altnau and Peißenberg. Here, approximately 15 km from its source, the river created this impressive gap in the rock called Scheibum, which is 600 m in length and up to 80 m deep. I has already been under nature protection since 1949. That’s why the Valley of the Ammer is one of the most beautiful and most natural finish river valleys in the Northern limestonealps.
Soier See (A lake)
The moorland water of the lake is gentle to the skin and good for the body. The little lake is situated in Bad Bayersoien, a mud spa. It heats up quickly in spring and even in summer it’s never overcrowded.
The nature trail around the lake is a highlight for the young. But not only children but also adults can learn a lot of willife in a playful way while swimming and njoying the sun.
On the south side of “Soier See” there is the bathing area with a kiosk, a large lawn for sunbathing and boat rentals.
Nordic Walking
Fitness training that is fun…
Enjoy the splendid landscape of the Ammergau Alps in an active but joint-friendly way, with Nordic Walking.
Quite near to our hotel there are 6 trails for Walking according to the guidelines of the DSV. We will be pleased to organize a trainer, a guided tour or poles for yo whenever you like. – And then out into the nature.
You will like this kind of exercise. It’s also a good start for rather untrained persons. We will be pleased to advise you. Afterwards you can relax in our beautyfarm or loosen up your muscles in our panorama swimming bath.
Cycling
The Ammergau Alps offer the perfect trails for both mountain bikes and trekking bikes. Even professional athletes do their training here. Various tournaments such as the Bavarian Championship of Cross Mountainbiking or the Tour Transalp are carried out in our region.
Hotel Schillingshof has cooperated with Ammertal Sportiv for some years. Therefore we offer you to store your bike in our basement, our washing area, boarding for your tours, and of course a lot of tips where to go, route plans, maps and GPS trails.
Travelling without an own bike is no problem
You can rent mountain bikes or e-bikes with us. or your own safety we recommend you to bring your own safety helmet, if you have one.
Back from your biking tour in the surroundings you can loosen up your muscles with a relaxing massage of your calves.

Wintersports
Wintertime in the mountains, that means snow-covered landscapes, fresh air, cosy evenings around the open fireplace, tobogganing …
For skiers our ”Hausberg Hörnle”, the closest mountain to Bad Kohlgrub, just in front of the door offers a lot of pleasre for both ski touring and downhill skiing enthusiasts. With a lift pass for the surrounding mountains you can dispose of much more ski-runs and well groomed slopes.
No question the nearby village of Garmisch-Partenkirchen and its skiing opportunities is always worth a visit.
The Ammergauer Alps are also famous for more than 30 km of trails and once a year there is the famous King Ludwig run from Oberammergau to Linderhof Castle. Our insiders’ tip the Graswangtal (only 10 minutes from Hotel Schillingshof) ensures bet snow conditions during the winter season. And afterwards you can wonderfully relax in our Wellness area and the beautyfarm.
Cross-country skiing
The Ammergau Alps with its 100 km long trails network are a dream come true for every enthusiastic country skiing. Start directly from the hotel Schillingshof and explore actively the Bad Kohlgruber winter landscape. The different groomed trails, suitable for both classic cross-country skiing technique as well as for the advanced “Skating“.
Our tip: After a long and active day in the snow, our spacious sauna area is the perfect ending.
Snowshoeing
The dream of untouched deep snow. Discover a whole new winter landscape with snowshoe tours come in areas that remain hidden to normal walkers. Our local mountain “The Hornle” offers fantastic tours for beginners and experienced. The altitude promises relatively sure snow fall.
Our tip: With a hot punch at our hotel bar the experiences of the day can be wonderfully passed in review.
Winter Hiking

Ski & Ski Touring
Though situated not high alpine, the Oberammergau area surrounding Bad Kohlgrub offers the skier some great opportunities to pursue his hobby. The Hoernle has a small but mighty skiing area. A chair and a tow lift will take you to mild and moderate downhill runs, a winter fun for the whole family.Especially popular is the Hoernle even at the ski touring. There is a separate ascent trail, which is accessible even in bright moonlight nights and offers a unique mountain experience.

The absolute winter pleasure, not only for children. On the many hills and slopes in the area around the hotel Schillingshof you can give the toboggan fun free. Bad Kohlgrub and its alpine moorelands
Bad Kohlgrub breathes an air of tradition. In the Middle Ages the Guelphes founded Cholgrueb. Its first mentined in 1280. Now we can look back on 120 years of being a spa and health resort. Everywhere in our idyllic village the gorgeous farmhouses show their Bavarian roots by their well-tended gardens, ther flower-decked balconies and their “Lüftlmalerei” a traditional Bavarian kind of fresco painting.
Since 1870 the tradition of being spa has steadily grown. Pasty pine mud from the alpine moorlands sustainabl harvested from the dwarf pine covered alpine moorlands around Bad Kohlgru and Bad Bayersoien have allowed Bad Kohlgrub to become one of the top addresses for spa visitors in the last decades. Our natural remedy mud is one of the most thoroughly investigated muds worldwide. As a product of the Ammergau Alps the mud and its applcation is highly regulated. The Hoernle – our closest mountain
Hotel Schillingshof is situated at the foot of the Hörnle and reover 900m yet. The mountain Hörnle is the closest mountain to Bad Kohlgrub, tergau Alps. The overhead railway to the peak starts just in front of our door.
The Hörnle is a most attractive destination where you can get to either on foot or by overhead railway. On the top there is an observation deck with a Nordic Walking trail insummer and skiing area and tobbogang run in winter. So the Hörnle offers various sporting activites during all seasons.You have a most impressive 360 degree view to the alpine foothills with the Bavarian lakes, the peak of Wetterstein, Karwendel and the Ammergau Alps.
Since autumn 2012 therehave been four rest stations around the three distinctive peaks of the Hörnl where you can get information on the unique nature of the Ammergau Alps. Just located behind the top station of the Hörnle overhead railway, on top of the mountain Zeitberg you can watch the 3D nature movie with unique panorama.

The Eibsee with its crystal clear water is located in an altitude of 1000 m near the villiage Grainau on the foot of the Zugspitze mountin. The lake is appreciated for its amazing beauty, the tranquility around and its rich fish stock enchants every fisherman during the fishing sason.
Lake Plansee is located close to the municipalities Breitenwang and Heiterwang in the district of Reutte (Tyrol /Austria) within the Ammergau Alps. In the scuba diving club of the village of Plansee (in the municipality Breitenwang) you get the chance of common diving in winter. A refreshing experience.

Oberammergau – Pilatushaus
The house named House of Pilatus is probably Oberammergau’s most famous bulding decorated with the colourful and attractive frescos known as Lüftlmalerei that adorn the façade of the house. The name of the house derived from the painting by Franz Seraph Fing on the south side of the house. In “Pilatushaus” you will find the “Living Workshop”, an exhibition of reverse glass paintings and a small shop.

Kochel am See – Franz Marc Museum
The museum founded in 1986 is dedicated to the work of Franz Marc. The so called “Aussichtsturm” (viewing tower) offers not only the works of Franz Marc but also a new perspective to the surrounding mountains.
Penzberg – Bergwerkmuseum
In Penzberg pitch has been mined till 1966. After the coal mine had been closed the former miners built the museum as a place to remember. Here they stored their original tools and working equipment, together with papers and photos.

It doesn’t take long and the spring fed pools turn into two little brooks which unite to the little river Ammer “Kleine Ammer”, which then winds in various loops over the low moorland of the Ettal basin. In the wide stream bed of the big river Ammer “Große Ammer” it then flows into the North.
Fatima Chapel
There is a small gem on the heights above the village Saulgrub. From there you can overlook the complete northern Ammer Valley. This small votive chapel was built by Josef Leismüller. When in 1939 as a young man he had to take part in the second World War, He vowed to build a chapel in the case of coming back fom the war in good health. After 5 years as a prisoner of war in Minsk he came back home to Saulgrub.
Another 4 years later he went on Pilgrimage to the Portuguese pilgrimage church Fatima. From there he took a statue of “Our Lady of Fatima” to Saulgrub. He stood up to his oath now and started together with a mason who was his friend to build Fatima Chapel hich was consecrated on 12th of September in 1954.
Rochusfeld
During the course of ages changing climatic conditions formed first the low moorlands with moss, grasses, bushes and trees. Plants didn’t rot in the oxyen-deprived and acid water of the lakes left by the glaciers but turn to peat. The lakes gradually silted up and the mud grew layer by layer. At all times the inhabitants of Bad Kohlgrub have been usin the mud according to their purposes. In former times the mud and turf pieces had only been used as heatng material. But since 1870 the precious mud had become a remedy because of its natural healing effect.
The mud’ s integral healing power animates metabolism and blood circulation, acts on hormone regulation, strengthens immune defense and ensures deep relaxation.
Scheibum – Gap of Ammer
About 120.000 years ago (top moraine area) after leaving the Alps the Ammer found its way to the North. By this a fascinating gorge of the Ammer has been formed. It is situated between Altnau and Peißenberg. Here, approximately 15 km from its source, the river created this impressive gap in the rock called Scheibum, which is 600 m in length and up to 80 m deep. I has already been under nature protection since 1949. That’s why the Valley of the Ammer is one of the most beautiful and most natural finish river valleys in the Northern limestonealps.
Soier See (A lake)
The moorland water of the lake is gentle to the skin and good for the body. The little lake is situated in Bad Bayersoien, a mud spa. It heats up quickly in spring and even in summer it’s never overcrowded.
The nature trail around the lake is a highlight for the young. But not only children but also adults can learn a lot of willife in a playful way while swimming and njoying the sun.
On the south side of “Soier See” there is the bathing area with a kiosk, a large lawn for sunbathing and boat rentals.

It leads accoss 15 stations starting from the Pilgrimage Church of Wies to the park of Linderhof Castle. Hiking in this mediation trail can be a break from your everyday life.

The Ammergau Alps offer the perfect trails for both mountain bikes and trekking bikes. Even professional athletes do their training here. Various tournaments such as the Bavarian Championship of Cross Mountainbiking or the Tour Transalp are carried out in our region.
Hotel Schillingshof has cooperated with Ammertal Sportiv for some years. Therefore we offer you to store your bike in our basement, our washing area, boarding for your tours, and of course a lot of tips where to go, route plans, maps and GPS trails.
Travelling without an own bike is no problem
You can rent mountain bikes or e-bikes with us. or your own safety we recommend you to bring your own safety helmet, if you have one.

Oberammergau – Pilatushaus
The house named House of Pilatus is probably Oberammergau’s most famous bulding decorated with the colourful and attractive frescos known as Lüftlmalerei that adorn the façade of the house. The name of the house derived from the painting by Franz Seraph Fing on the south side of the house. In “Pilatushaus” you will find the “Living Workshop”, an exhibition of reverse glass paintings and a small shop.

Kochel am See – Franz Marc Museum
The museum founded in 1986 is dedicated to the work of Franz Marc. The so called “Aussichtsturm” (viewing tower) offers not only the works of Franz Marc but also a new perspective to the surrounding mountains.
Penzberg – Bergwerkmuseum
In Penzberg pitch has been mined till 1966. After the coal mine had been closed the former miners built the museum as a place to remember. Here they stored their original tools and working equipment, together with papers and photos.
